The Real Cost Of Unqualified Poly Welders

If your welders aren’t qualified, you have a problem – you just might not know it yet.

In Australia, you can’t legally weld polyethylene pipe without being trained and assessed as competent. That’s not a guideline or a best practice. It’s a requirement.

But here’s the thing: unlike most skilled trades, there’s no licence card to flash, no credential that shows up on a site induction form. Poly welding qualifications are invisible – until something goes wrong.

So what’s actually required?

Anyone performing butt welding or electrofusion welding on PE pipe systems in Australia needs to hold a nationally accredited unit of competency. This flows through the National Construction Code, which references the Plumbing Code and the installation standards that govern PE pipe systems.

The two qualifications you need to know:
  • PMBWELD301E – Join polyethylene pipes using butt welding
  • PMBWELD302E – Join polyethylene pipes using electrofusion welding

These aren’t tick-a-box courses. They verify that a welder understands correct preparation, welding procedures, quality assurance and the safety practices needed to produce joints that actually hold up – in water, gas, mining, civil and plumbing applications.

Why does it matter?

Because the consequences of getting it wrong are real.

Unqualified welders can be turned away from site or pulled off a project mid-job. Beyond that, using unqualified installers can void manufacturer warranties, create gaps in your compliance documentation, and leave you exposed if something fails and an insurer starts asking questions.

Asset owners, principal contractors and manufacturers aren’t quiet about their expectations. Welding must be done by qualified people. Full stop.

This is what Lernna does.

Lernna delivers nationally accredited training in both PMBWELD301E and PMBWELD302E — for individual welders chasing certification, contractors keeping their crews compliant, and organisations that want to close a risk gap before it becomes a costly one.

Don’t find out your team isn’t qualified during a site audit or a warranty dispute.

Get them trained before they step on site.
